Getting Started

Q: What is Are You Up?

Are You Up is a minimalist alarm app designed to prevent you from accidentally dismissing your alarm while half-asleep. Instead of letting you swipe to dismiss, the app offers two challenge modes that require you to be awake before the alarm can be turned off:​

Hold to Stop: Press and hold a button for 5 continuous seconds.​

•
Math Challenge: Solve 3 simple arithmetic problems.​

Q: What devices does it support?

Are You Up requires iOS 26.0 or later. It is built using Apple's AlarmKit framework, which is only available on iOS 26 and above. The app works on iPhone and iPad.​

Q: How do I create my first alarm?

1.
Open the app​

2.
Tap the + button in the top right corner​

3.
Set the time, repeat schedule, and dismiss method​

4.
Tap Save​

The first time you create an alarm, you'll be asked to grant the app permission to schedule alarms and send notifications. Please allow both — without alarm permission, alarms cannot ring; without notification permission, you won't receive challenge reminders.​

Alarms Not Ringing

Q: My alarm did not ring. What should I check?

Please verify the following:

1.
Alarm permission is granted Go to: Settings → Privacy & Security → Alarms and ensure Are You Up has permission. If the app is not listed, please reinstall the app.​

2.
The alarm is enabled Open Are You Up and confirm the toggle next to your alarm is on.​

3.
The alarm time and repeat schedule are correct Tap the alarm row to verify the configuration.​

4.
Volume is turned up Are You Up uses your system's ringtone volume. Make sure it is not set to zero. You can adjust this in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and Alerts.​

5.
The device has not been restarted with low battery AlarmKit alarms persist across normal restarts, but in rare edge cases (e.g., battery completely drained), alarms may need to be re-scheduled. Open the app once to ensure all alarms are active.​

Dismiss Methods

Q: What is the difference between Hold to Stop, Math Challenge, and Swipe to Dismiss?​

•
Hold to Stop (Pro feature): When the alarm rings, you must press and hold a button for 5 seconds to dismiss it. If you let go before 5 seconds, the timer resets. This prevents accidental dismissal while half-asleep.​

•
Math Challenge (Pro feature): When the alarm rings, you must answer 3 simple arithmetic problems (within 20). If you answer incorrectly, a new problem appears. This forces your brain to wake up.​

•
Swipe to Dismiss (Always free): A simple swipe-to-dismiss alarm, similar to the iPhone's built-in clock. This is available to all users.​

Q: What happens if I don't complete the challenge?

If you swipe to dismiss the alarm but don't complete the Hold or Math challenge (e.g., you exit the app or lock your screen), the alarm will ring again automatically after 1 minute. This loop continues until you complete the challenge.​

This is by design — it ensures the app actually wakes you up rather than letting you bypass it half-asleep.​

Q: I dismissed my alarm but I'm getting notifications. Why?

When you dismiss an alarm set to Hold to Stop or Math Challenge mode without completing the challenge, Are You Up sends two reminder notifications:​
